In 2023, a 1 MW floating photovoltaic system was installed on the quarry pond of a gravel works in Bensheim and became operational in early 2024. This state-of-the-art installation covers just 0.6 hectares, yet produces a substantial amount of clean energy. By floating the solar panels above the water, the modules benefit from natural cooling, increasing their efficiency and extending their lifespan. Additionally, the coverage helps reduce water evaporation and fosters a more favorable microclimate.
Supplying a significant portion of the gravel plant’s electricity needs, this project contributes to CO₂ reduction and demonstrates how industrial sites can be sustainably repurposed without consuming additional land. The system’s rapid deployment—completed in just a few weeks—was made possible by Intech’s easy-to-assemble floaters.
Key Highlights:
- Efficient water-surface use: 1 MW generated on only 0.6 hectares
- Enhanced performance: Cooler modules yield higher output and durability
- Evaporation control & climate benefits: Reduces water loss and improves local conditions
- Quick, sustainable installation: No extra land required, deployed in weeks
